C 27J Spartans Plus For SearchThe aircraft has all weather, day and night flying abilities, a plus for search and rescue operations, a loiter time of up to nine hours, and can land in as little as 750 feet. The United States Air Force purchased some 38 of the aircraft in 2009. They were flown through 2013 when retired due to duplication of missions from the C-130 and higher maintenance costs. ![]() Air Force aircraft were transferred to the U.S. Special Operations Command. In 2016 an additional 14 former U.S. Air Force Alenia C-27J Spartan aircraft were transferred to the U.S. ![]() In December of 2013 an Italian C-27J Spartan aircraft was deployed to the Philippines to assist in humanitarian operations relief from typhoon Haiyin.
